English notes from week of: 11/16/15

Regular and Irregular Plural Nouns

Plural Nouns- name MORE THAN ONE person, place, or thing.

·       Form most plural nouns by adding S.
EXAMPLE: chair (chairs), girl (girls), pencil (pencils)

·       Add ES to nouns that end in: ch, sh, x, z, s, and ss.
EXAMPLE: church (churches), brush (brushes), box (boxes)

·       If a noun ends in a consonant and Y, change the Y to an I and add ES.  EXAMPLE: berry (berries), library (libraries)

Irregular Plural Nouns- these nouns must change spelling to become plural forms.

EXAMPLE: Woman (women), child (children), foot (feet)

·       For most nouns that end in F or FE, change the F to a V and add ES. EXAMPLE: shelf (shelves), wolf (wolves)

·       Some nouns are the SAME in their singular and plural forms.
EXAMPLE: sheep, fish, moose, deer

·       In compound nouns, make ONLY the important word plural.
EXAMPLE: father-in-law (fathers-in-law)

·       When a noun ends in a vowel and O, add S.
EXAMPLE: video (videos), radio (radios)

·       If a noun ends in a consonant and O (EXAMPLE: tomato), check the dictionary because they are different.
