Verbs, Objects and Subject Complements

·      A direct object (DO) comes after an action verb and tells WHO/WHAT receives the action.

EXAMPLE: Molly kicked the ball. (“Molly” is the subject, “kicked” is the action, “ball” is the DO).
---Ask yourself, “Molly kicked WHAT?” to find the DO.

·      An indirect object (IO) comes after an action verb and tells TO WHOM/WHAT the action of the verb is done.

EXAMPLE: Ashley handed Lauren the dish. (“Ashley” is the subject, “handed” is the action, “dish” is the DO, and “Lauren” is the IO).
---Ask yourself, “Ashley handed dish TO WHOM?” to find the IO.

·      A subject complement comes after a linking verb and tells who/what the subject is or is like.

EXAMPLE: Alyssa seemed happy. (“Alyssa” is the subject, “seemed” is the linking verb, and “happy” is the subject complement).
