Verbs,
Objects and Subject Complements
· A direct object
(DO) comes after an action verb and tells WHO/WHAT receives the action.
EXAMPLE:
Molly kicked the ball. (“Molly” is the subject, “kicked” is the action, “ball”
is the DO).
---Ask yourself, “Molly
kicked WHAT?” to find the DO.
· An indirect
object (IO) comes after an action verb and tells TO WHOM/WHAT the action of
the verb is done.
EXAMPLE:
Ashley handed Lauren the dish. (“Ashley” is the subject, “handed” is the
action, “dish” is the DO, and “Lauren” is the IO).
---Ask yourself, “Ashley
handed dish TO WHOM?” to find the IO.
· A subject
complement comes after a linking verb and tells who/what the subject is or
is like.
EXAMPLE:
Alyssa seemed happy. (“Alyssa” is the subject, “seemed” is the linking verb,
and “happy” is the subject complement).
