English Notes for Review: Four Kinds of Sentences

Grammar

Definition:  a set of rules for using words correctly


Reasons for Using Good Grammar:

1.     To speak correctly
2.    To write correctly
3.     To think logically
4.     To recognize good literature




Parts of Speech

Definition:  the eight types of words in the English language:
        *nouns
        *pronouns
        *adjectives
        *verbs
        *adverbs
        *prepositions
        *conjunctions
        *interjections


Sentence

Definition:  a group of words that express a complete thought; needs a subject and a predicate (verb)




4 Kinds of Sentences

1.   Declarative: makes a statement, just tells a fact; ends with a period
Example: My dog chases cars.

2.  Interrogative: asks a question, ends with a question mark
Example: Do you like spaghetti?

3.   Exclamatory: shows emotion, strong feelings, excitement, surprise, etc.; ends with an exclamation mark
Example: What a beautiful day it is!

4.   Imperative: gives an order, makes a request, wants someone to do something, many times has the word PLEASE in it; ends with a period
Example: Please get a haircut.


Fragment

Definition: a part of a sentence where either the subject or the verb (or both) are missing



Run-On Sentence


Definition: a sentence that is too long; it needs a period to separate its parts
